Hunt: I was wrong to blast Hlanti publicly

Gavin Hunt has admitted that he was “out of order” to publicly blast defender Sifiso “Chopa” Hlanti.

Hlanti recently had a dismal showing for Bidvest Wits in their 2-0 loss to SuperSport United in a Premiership clash.

A livid Hunt singled out left-back Hlanti for blame during his post-match interview.

But Hunt has since admitted his lashing of the Bafana Bafana defender was uncalled for.

“Maybe I shouldn’t have reacted the way I reacted. Sometimes you need flair to make a player get back to his best and sometimes it is talk, talk. Yes, I was wrong,” Hunt admitted after Wits trounced Real Kings 4-0 in the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup in Durban at the weekend.

Hlanti is an integral part of the Clever Boys and an experienced player who did not allow the criticism to get to him. Instead, he appears to have been invigorated as he has dished out some solid performances since that poor showing against Matsatsantsa.

Hunt, meanwhile, says he will not publicly blame his players going forward.

“Would I do it again? No, I don’t think so. Things happen in football. He knows. You can’t keep hiding, you know what I mean,” he added.

Newcastle-born Hlanti has flourished since joining Wits from AmaZulu back in 2014.
