JOHANNESBURG – Steve Komphela says he hopes to see his luck change in as far as ending his personal drought of trophies.
Kaizer Chiefs take on Golden Arrows in the last 32 of the Nedbank Cup on Sunday at FNB Stadium, and their coach is desperate to go all the way in this tournament.
Since his arrival in 2015, Komphela has reached two cup finals with Amakhosi, but failed to win both – losing to Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns in the same season. He’s not been able to escape the wrath of the Chiefs supporters to date.
“I have been wondering when the football gods will finally smile at me,” Komphela said on Thursday afternoon.
“I want to be so selfless that if I was asked that is it okay if I perish so that Chiefs win a trophy and the people are happy, I will gladly accept.”
The coach is also still hopeful of toppling Absa Premiership log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have opened up a seven-point gap, in the final weeks of the 2017-18 season. But many have said this is an unrealistic expectation.
Komphela said he does not lose sleep over the lack of silverware at Chiefs, but admitted that it is the pain the supporters feel that haunts him.
“The club must be protected,” he said. “My circumstances growing up were unforgiving and at the back of no expectations, there were no disappointments.
“That’s why I have no regrets irrespective of the conditions. But a club like Chiefs, such a big brand, needs to keep achieving and for its people to be happy.”
