CAPE TOWN – Not only did Orlando Pirates go down to Cape Town City at the weekend, they have also suffered a blow to one of their key figures.

Winger Luvuyo Memela, one of the most popular players in the Buccaneers camp, picked up a knee strain in the 1-0 defeat to Benni McCarthy’s outfit at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.

The loss effectively ended any hopes that Pirates may have had of staying in the Premiership title race, although Mamelodi Sundowns took matters into their own hands by dispatching Ajax Cape Town 3-1 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville to claim their eighth PSL title.

Pirates said in a statement on their website that Memela will be sent to a specialist to determine how serious the injury is, and it could rule him out of the final match of the season against Free State Stars on May 12 at the Orlando Stadium.

The Buccaneers added that Thabiso Kutumela is progressing well with his rehabilitation, while Mthokozisi Dube has recovered from a groin strain.
