Maritzburg United go fourth with good win over Stellenbosch FC
Maritzburg United toppled SuperSport United to go fourth on the log as they dispatched Stellenbosch 3-0 in another night of entertaining football on Friday night at Harry Gwala Stadium.
The Team of Choice have now amassed 36 points after 23 games in the Absa Premiership. It was a third victory on the trot for Maritzburg in the league. They are now on the roll.
Maritzburg got an early lead in the 13th minute. Thabiso Kutumela tested Lee Langeveldt from distance but the rebound fell in to the path of Bongokuhle Hlongwane who headed his side into the lead.
Keagan Buchanan bossed the midfield with his silky skills and deft touches in the middle of the park.
The Team of Choice were all over the visitors and were piling on the pressure with their movements in the final third.
Tebogo Tlolane almost doubled the lead for the home side but Nyiko Mobbie made a great tackle to prevent the ball from rattling the back of the net.
From that resulted corner kick, Pogiso Senoka rose the highest in the box but couldn't direct his attempted header on target and Stellies survived.
A minutes later, Langeveldt was called into action once again only to deny Hlongwane from completing his brace.
Stellenbosch were forced to make their first substitution in the first half after the injury of Mpho Matsi. He was replaced by Granwald Scott just five minutes before the interval.
Richard Ofori was on holiday in the first half as Iqraam Rayners asked some questions from distance but ballooned his shot over the bar.
Maritzburg doubled their lead in the 57th minutes. Hlongwane was causing a havoc for the visitors with his pace. He tormented a few Stellenbosch defenders before laying the ball in to the path of Tlolane who finished with aplomb.
Daylon Claasen fluffed a glorious opportunity to kill the game off for the Team of Choice.
Tlolane was the provider but Claasen attempt sailed wide. Maritzburg were creating all their chance from the left and side of Stellenbosch.
The Team of Choice turned on the style after doubling their lead. The likes of Buchanan and Tlolane were enjoying themselves with some few tricks.
Hlongwane completed his brace with a thumping header in the 85th minutes. Tlolane was the provider from the right and side and Hlongwane rose the highest to kill the game off.
