JOHANNESBURG - Buhle Mkhwanazi is set to earn himself a contract extension at Bidvest Wits for his vigilant displays at the back in past two seasons.
Mkhwanazi was instrumental for the Clever Boys in their Absa Premiership and MTN8 triumph. Unfortunately, an injured compelled him to commence the season on the sidelines. He was out for eight months.
His absence in Wits defence was evident as they conceded 13 goals without his services. He came back and stabilised the Wits defence in the last three matches.
Wits kept a clean sheet against Kaizer Chiefs in the semi-final of the Telkom Knockout at Bidvest Stadium and claimed their second clean sheets in a league outing this season when they played out to 0-0 stalemate against Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium in Petermaritzburg.
Paul Mitchell of Siyavuma Sports Agency has revealed that Mkhwanazi is set to stay with Wits despite murmurs linking him to Orlando Pirates.
“I don’t know anything about Mkhwanazi and Pirates. They haven’t been in contact with me. Wits haven’t told me anything. The boy is still happy at Wits. He is well taken care of. He still contracted to Wits for the next couple of seasons. Next week, I will meet with Wits to discuss the new deal,” Mitchell explained.
Pirates have struggled to strike solid partnership at the back since Lucky Lekgwathi, Siyabonga Sangweni and Rooi Mahamutsa left the club.
Legwathi and Sangweni retired and Mahamutsa is plying his trade with Free State Stars.
Mkhwanazi has formed a solid partnership with Wits captain Thulani “Tyson” Hlatshwayo at the heart of defence for the Clever Boys.
“Buhle has done well for Wits in the last few months. He is settled and he doesn’t want to move to a locally club at this stage of his career,” Mitchell concluded.
