Bidvest Wits sensation Phakamani Mahlambi is set to join African giants Al Ahly.

The transfer window in Egypt will close on September 14.

Mahlambi (19) has also been on the radar of Mamelodi Sundowns.

Wits offered the SA Under-20 player to Sundowns, according to Masandawana spokesperson Thulani Thuswa, but the two clubs didn’t agree on the deal.

Independent Media understands that Mahlambi is on his way to Egypt.

“Mahlambi is going to Egypt. One of the guys at Wits told me that he is leaving and will be joining Al Ahly,” a well-placed source stated.

Mahlambi is the current PSL Young Player of the Season. Recently, he was on trial in Portugal with Vitoria Guimaraes.

Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane felt they missed out on Mahlambi, although he didn’t mention his name.

“We missed out on a 19 year old, good on the ball, has pace and an eye for goal. I was going to polish him like I did to Khama Billiat when he arrived from Ajax Cape Town,” Mosimane stated.

Wits CEO Jose Ferreira confirmed the Al Ahly interest.

“Yes, they are interested in Phakamani, but we haven’t agreed on anything. At the moment there’s nothing to discuss, but I can confirm that they are one of the teams,” Ferreira explained.
