Goals from Vukile Mngqibisa and Thobani Mncwango secured a 2-1 for Polokwane City over the University of Pretoria in an Absa Premiership encounter at Tuks Stadium on Saturday night.

Tshilo Thapelo scored a late own goal but Rise and Shine held on to secure their first away win in 13 attempts.

Both coaches made two changes to their starting XI’s. Geofrey Massa and Raymond Monama returned for the hosts while Itumeleng Motsiane and Sipho Jembula were included from the onset for the visitors.

AmaTuks looked the better side in the first half, bossing possession and subsequently forcing their opponents deep into their own half.

Rise and Shine in all honesty didn’t look like a side that wanted to avoid relegation in the first stanza but it was the men from Limpopo who went into the break 1-0 up.

Mpho Matsi’s thunderous attempt from range just cleared Modiri Marumo’s crossbar early on before Atusaye Nyondo failed to convert a glorious chance in the 17th minute.

Marumo spilled Geofrey Massa’s powerful effort into the path of Nyondo but the Malawian marksman failed to latch onto the rebound.

Polokwane City were rewarded a disputable spot-kick on the cusp of half-time. Buhle Mkhwanazi looked to have won the ball with a sliding tackle but the referee adjudged that he brought down Jembula illegally inside the area.

Vukile Mngqibisa duly stepped up and converted with confidence. AmaTuks 0-1 Polokwane City at the interval.

The hosts pushed forward in search of the equaliser with Raymond Monama notably putting the ball wide from close range on the hour mark after beating the off side trap.

The home side’s attacking intent left them vulnerable on the counter and it was through this manner that Rise and Shine scored the decisive goal in the 90th minute.

Thabo Rakhale broke down the right flank before picking out Thobani Mncwango who finished from close range.

Thapelo Tshilo scored a late own goal but City held on to leapfrog Free State Stars into 14th spot.
