Johannesburg - The Premier Soccer League (PSL) on Tuesday charged Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs with spectator misbehaviour following the teams' recent semi-final clashes in the MTN8 cup competition.
Pirates will face charges relating to spectator misbehaviour and unsporting behaviour following an allegation that Bucs supporters threw an assortment of objects onto the pitch during the second-leg fixture against SuperSport United at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday.
The Buccaneers, the cup's defending champions, were eliminated from the competition after a 3-0 second-leg defeat to United.
The match descended into chaos when Pirates striker Benni McCarthy was sent off just before the half-time break after he was shown a second yellow card by the match referee.
During the game, three fireworks were lit and one was thrown at United goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez.
The match had to be halted in the 66th minute as the referee called players into the centre circle, waiting for the crowd to calm down as fireworks were lit.
Police were called to the stadium after full-time, and a heavy-duty police vehicle drove onto the field as a precautionary measure.
Two fans were arrested by stadium security in the players' tunnel after the fixture.
Meanwhile, Chiefs were charged for a similar offence in their first-leg encounter against Mamelodi Sundowns on August 5 at the Loftus Stadium.
It is alleged that Chiefs supporters behaved in an unruly or unsporting manner, throwing a variety of objects onto the pitch during the game.
Representatives of both clubs will appear before the PSL disciplinary committee on September 7.
