Cape Town - The Mother City’s football followers will again have only one local team to watch in the PSL this coming season - Ajax Cape Town.
Even though, Philippi-based Chippa United have won promotion to the top-flight, club chairman Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi said he doubts his team will play any home games in Cape Town.
Of their 15 home matches, Chippa are expected to play 10 in the Eastern Cape and the other five in the Free State.
“The negotiation for this scenario is almost complete,” said Mpengesi.
“It doesn’t look very good for Cape Town. And, to be honest, I would be very disappointed if we should play any games in the Cape.
“Football, I believe, just doesn’t talk to Cape Town.
“I don’t believe people of this region are hungry for football, and that includes the government of the province and the city.
“I want to take Chippa United to areas where people love the game, where they want to watch football.
“It’s time to take the emotion out of things. It will be disappointing for some of our local Cape fans, but we have a larger vision we want to achieve.”
