JOHANNESBURG - Mamelodi Sundowns are slowly pulling away from the chasing pack with a two-point lead at the summit, and have three games in hand.

But the club - and coach Pitso Mosimane - aren’t getting carried away as they know that games in hand don’t necessarily mean points in the bag. They learnt that lesson the hard way last season, which led to Bidvest Wits claiming their maiden league title. Sundowns picked up six points in their past two matches, including a 4-0 drubbing of then-leaders Baroka FC. The Brazilians dominate our team of the week with three players, Denis Onyango, Soumahoro Bangaly and Percy Tau.

Onyango kept a 100% clean sheets in the club’s last four matches. His performances in goal have been the foundation for the Brazilians. The club’s free-scoring attack complement the Ugandan goalkeeper well. Tau netted a brace against Baroka and went on to say he agrees with Mosimane that he ought to be scoring more. Tau is part of a midfield that features Teboho Mokoena, Aubrey Ngoma and Ndiviwe Mdabuka.

The competition for places upfront was intense, which led to a three-man attack. The Maritzburg United pair of Evans Rusike and Mohau Mokate helped the club shake off their slump to collect six out of six points. The 'Team of Choice' scored seven goals in two matches to make up for going seven games without finding the back of the net in the Absa Premiership. Four of those seven goals came from Rusike and Mokate.
