CAPE TOWN - SuperSport United forward, Fagrie Lakay, has refused to join Maritzburg United on loan for the new season. United were interested in Lakay, who enjoyed regular game time and regained form while on loan at Ajax Cape Town last season.

The Team of Choice are still searching for a replacement for Evans Rusike. The Zimbabwean joined Matsatsantsa A Pitori in January. SuperSport United chief executive Stan Matthews has clarified Lakay’s future.

“Yes, it is true that Maritzburg United were interested in Fagrie Lakay. The player indicated that he is not interested in going on loan to Maritzburg United and that ended our talks early,” Matthews said. “Fagrie told us that he wants to stay with us. He wants to push Thuso Phala for the jersey and we granted him that opportunity.”

Maritzburg are also assessing also Supersport’s Zimbabwean international Prince Dube. The Team of Choice will start the season with Andrea Fileccia and Mohau Mokate up front. If Dube impresses he will be added to United’s arsenal. Maritzburg enjoyed their best season last season and will look to replicate that success. The club has bolstered the squad with players like Keagan Buchanan, Denwin Farmer and Nazeer Allie.

Allie brings a wealth of experience at the back having been in top flight football for 14 years. He won trophies with Ajax Cape Town and Bidvest Wits. He is expected to form a formidable partnership at the back with Siyanda Xulu at the heart of defence. United were the second best defensive side in the league last season.

Xulu was voted the best defender in the league, Bevan Fransman was a nominee in the same category and Richard Ofori lost out to Kaizer Chiefs goal-minder, Itumeleng Khune, for the Goalkeeper of the Season gong. United have since parted with Fransman, but the addition of Allie will make a huge difference at the back.
