“Go for the jugular!”

That was the message from new Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy to his players on his first day in the job.

McCarthy was unveiled on Tuesday as the new head coach of City, replacing Eric Tinkler, who has joined SuperSport United after just a single season in Cape Town.

This is 39-year-old McCarthy’s first post in charge, but he wants his team to go even higher than last season, where they ended third in the Premiership and won the Telkom Knockout.

Benni also received a warm welcome from City captain Lebogang Manyama on Wednesday. “Firstly, I would love to welcome Coach Benni. I think it’s very exciting obviously for the team to get a manager like Benni to lead us, because I think he is a person that has so much knowledge about football to share,” the skipper said via City’s Twitter account.

“I’m very happy that we are going to be the team to benefit from that. It’s not going to be easy, but one thing I can assure him is that we are all in it with him all the way. Welcome to the CTCFC family, Coach Benni. All the best.”
