CAPE TOWN – Fifa announced on Monday that Baroka FC goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke’s incredible bicycle-kick goal has made the final short-list of three for the 2017 Fifa Puskás Award for the “most beautiful goal of the season”.

Few will forget Masuluke’s dramatic stoppage-time goal against Orlando Pirates at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on November 1 last year, when he launched himself on the edge of the box and connected sweetly with the ball.

A despairing dive from Pirates opposite number Jackson Mabokgwane was not enough to keep it out as the ball squeezed in at the left-hand post to hand Baroka the equaliser in the 1-1 draw.

Masuluke did a special dance in celebrating the goal, but unbelievably, the out-of-this-world strike was not deemed good enough to be voted as the PSL Goal of the Season.

As with many awards in South Africa, that gong came down to a popularity contest as the fans voted for Kaizer Chiefs stalwart Siphiwe Tshabalala’s goal.

But now Masuluke has already achieved global recognition, and now needs the people of Mzansi to vote in the second round until October 23, when the winner will be announced at The Best Fifa Football Awards 2017 in London.

The other finalists are Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud and Deyna Castellanos from the Venezuela Under-17 girls team.
