What happened to jersey number 10 at Kaizer Chiefs? Is this number cursed? And should the new arrivals go for this number?
Keagan Buchanan is currently wearing jersey number 10 but he is likely to be loaned out in this transfer window.
Jersey No 10 is a huge number around the globe. The likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar, Harry Kane, Zlatan Ibrahamovic and Eden Hazard are also wearing this number and their work in the field of play speaks volumes.
But that hasn’t been the case for Buchanan who signed for Amakhosi at the start of last season.
He has struggled since joining the club – injuries and poor performances whenever he has been given opportunities the reasons for his failure.
Buchanan is not the only one to struggle with the number 10 at Chiefs. Before him there was Siyabonga Nkosi. He returned to Amakhosi in his second spell with huge expectations in 2012.
Nkosi had been a darling of the Chiefs fans during his first season-long spell in 2006 before he signed for Armina Bielefeld in Germany.
But the second time around at Chiefs, he didn’t perform and the fans started to boo him. After three seasons with Amakhosi he decided to call it quits.
Stanton Fredericks is the last player to display vigilant performances while donning jersey No10. Stiga, as he was affectionately known to his fans, propelled Amakhosi to their Castle Premiership triumph in 2003/04.
After that season he was snapped up by Russian giants FC Moscow, and Zambian Shonge Chalwe took over from him.
But Chalwe was another flop at No10 before former Under-23 International Michael Nkambule was given the jersey but he too failed to live up to expectations.
Amakhosi then signed Mthokozisi Yende from University of Pretoria after he impressed during AmaTuks’ fairy-tale run in the Nedbank Cup in 2009.
Yende was a player tipped to follow in the footsteps of Fredericks but he also didn’t deliver what was expected of him.
Isaacs “Shakes” Kungwane also wore the jersey and he performed with distinction at Amakhosi.
So will the newcomers also go for number 10? Chiefs have announced the signings of the exciting duo of Siphelele “Stashi” Ntshangase and Kabelo “Skipper” Mahlasela - this after Leonardo Castro was unveiled as the first signing in this transfer window in December.
If one of these three does decide to go for No10, they will certainly be under pressure to do the famous jersey proud.
