Johannesburg - South African President Zuma on Tuesday sent a message of condolence following the crash of a chartered aircraft carrying a Brazilian football team.

Department of International Relations and Cooperation spokesperson Clayson Monyela said: “On behalf of the Government and the people of South Africa, President Jacob Zuma has conveyed a message of condolences to the Government and people of the Federative Republic of Brazil, especially the families, friends and colleagues of all the victims of a chartered plane that crashed over a mountainous region in Colombia this morning.” The plane, which was carrying Brazilian first division football team Chapecoense, crashed near Medellin while on its way to the finals of a regional tournament. The death toll sits at 76 people, including the football team and accompanying entourage of staff and journalists, who were among the 72 passengers and nine crew on board the aircraft. There were only five survivors. “On behalf of the Government and people of South Africa, I wish to send my deepest condolences to the Government of Brazil, particularly the families and friends affected by the tragedy. We wish the survivors a speedy recovery,” said Zuma.
