Sao Paulo – Argentina's Federico Delbonis, ranked 61 in the world, won the Brazil Open on Sunday with a three-set success over Italian Paolo Lorenzi.

Delbonis, 23, beat his 114th-ranked rival 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to capture his first ATP Tour crown.

The win saw him fulfil some of the potential he had shown in beating Roger Federer in the Hamburg semi-finals as a qualifier last July.

Lorenzi had beaten his left-handed rival in three Challenger events but was unable to capitalise on a strong start which landed him the opening set.

He leaves Sao Paulo with the consolation of having at least played his first final at the age of 32. – Sapa-AFP
