DURBAN - GROWING up in a household of women stood one of GQ magazine’s Top 10 best dressed men, musician Mthoko “Dash” Mkhathini, in good stead.

The Durban-born TV personality’s clean and stylish dress sense saw him finishing seventh among the best dressed, with creative entrepreneur Menzi Mcunu winning.

Speaking to the Sunday Tribune this week, Dash, a Northwood High School old boy, reflected on his passion for fashion.

“I have always taken care of myself. I grew up living with women, my mother and sister, and they taught me about style. They taught me the importance of looking after myself because image is everything,” he said.

Dash shot to fame with the rap group, Dream Team, and later moved into TV presenting with his sexy look, dress sense and bubbly personality. He presents shows on DStv’s youth entertainment channels Vuzu and Mzansi Magic.

“I have always known and liked fashion but my style is more of street culture. I don’t have a stylist,” he said.

Dash said he restrained his personal style when he was
on Dream Team duties as that setting was about the collective, not the individual. But on television and with his A-list celebrity girlfriend Top Billing’s Ayanda Thabethe, he expresses himself.

“I put my own ideas together and dress the way I like,” said Dash. “Even at my place, all my clothes in my closet are placed in order according to their colours, even the shoes are kept in their boxes. It’s all neat and in order, it makes it easy for me to choose what to wear because my clothes are not mixed up,” he said.

He desperately wanted to study fashion after school, but his mother told him he would be wasting his time as he knew it all already and opted for graphic design as
a result, which helped him with marketing and branding fundamentals.

Before the fame, he worked as a stylist for brands such as Vertigo and now harbours ambitions of becoming a
retail mogul.

“Right now, I am building relationships and growing my brand so that when I venture into the retail space, it will be easy for people to support me because my brand will already be known. Even Pharrell Williams and Kanye West had their clothing labels when they were already big brands,” he said.
