DURBAN - ALL Xae wants to do is sing, and tonight she will get her first chance to sing in front of a live stage in the Top 16 girls show on Idols.

The 19-year-old from Pinetown, Durban, is one of three hopefuls flying the KwaZulu-Natal flag in this season of the competition.

“I used to perform at musicals at school since Grade 8,” recalled Xae, whose birth name is Zama Memela.

The former Pinetown Girls High School would be singer said she was the first person to be given a solo role in a high school production while she was in Grade 8.

“That was really cool,” she quipped, adding that the production was in partnership with Pinetown Boys High.

Xae graced the stage and even had a lead role in the high school production, but she admits the Idols live stage tonight will be the biggest stage she has performed in thus far.

“Being able to get the lead was amazing and it was a big deal for me. It’s nice to get solos but it’s nice to get that spotlight,” she said. “I was happy to do both acting and singing, it was an amazing experience,” she said.

Xae, who was a student at the International Hotel School in Westville this year, said she was “only interested in the music”.

“I have a passion for this,” she said. “I see myself singing all over the world,” she said.

She will perform Broken Clocks by SZA tonight.

The girls perform tonight from 5pm on Mzansi Magic.
