Durban - THE leadership of the KwaXimba branch of the ANC is expecting up to 1 200 of its members on the voting roll to take part in its branch general meeting at 11am on Sunday.

Branch treasurer and Ward 1 councillor Musa Mkhize said the branch firmly endorsed Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma to become the party’s 14th president, and the ANC’s first female leader in its 105-year history, at the national elective conference in December.

“We are backing Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma. She has visited the ward twice and she got the blessing of the entire community,” Mkhize said.

He said their membership in good standing stood at 3 200, but some members had joined only recently and had not completed six months’ probation, as required by the ANC’s constitution. He said besides being a woman touted to become the party’s first female leader, the branch, the biggest in the country, backed Dlamini Zuma because she was an illustrious leader and a professional.

Mkhize said he expected today’s proceedings to be peaceful because the branch was representing the view of the masses in the community.

“We will be adopting what the mass want to see, which is the ANC-led  government going forward for the next five years. Dlamini Zuma has worked on some of the policies that are being implemented now. The ward is progressing in terms of development,” Mkhize said.

He said Dlamini Zuma had played a pivotal role in ensuring that the KwaXimba leadership engages with private companies to uplift communities in the area. He said there had been much development in the area, including new tarred roads, the electrification of 90% of homes in the area, clean water, housing and schools.

Among other developments to advance the area, in line with the party’s radical economic transformation policy, was a mall that is due to be launched shortly. ANC provincial secretary Super Zuma said branches in some regions had started sitting last week.

The party said it would deploy national executive members to oversee the smooth running of branch general meetings. However, Zuma did not want to divulge which NEC member had been deployed to KwaXimba.

In terms of security at branch general meetings, Zuma said: “It’s a normal sitting of an ANC branch. All branches will sit normally and, if a situation arises, we will address it at the time.”
