Johannesburg - What’s it take to look like a million dollars on the red carpet for an A-list celebrity like Bonang Matheba?

“The process starts with my designer, Gert Johan Coetzee. We started two weeks ago. When I heard I had been nominated (for an MTV Africa Music award) I told him I did not want a dress,” the television presenter and Metro FM DJ said at the swanky Beverly Hills Hotel in uMhlanga Rocks, giving The Sunday Independent an exclusive insight into what happens behind the scenes.

At times, what she wears has something to do with what her date is wearing, she added.

In this case she was referring to Nigerian musician D’banj.

Although some sources say he is her boyfriend, Matheba referred to D’banj as her “date”.

“My date said he was wearing black, so I also had to go for black,” she said.

After her outfit has been chosen, the next stage involves celebrity make-up artist and stylist Nthato Mashishi. The pair have been working together for nearly five years.

“Nthato comes up with the hair and make-up. This time we have gone for a short weave. We are going for a rock star look. I am always in a sleek, classic look. This time I wanted an edgy look,” Matheba said.

Does it really matter how she looks when she goes to events?

“Absolutely, I am known for what I wear. It forms a large part of who I am. Getting ready is my favourite part of my job. It’s fun – especially for a big ceremony.”

Getting Matheba ready for an event and making sure everything is perfect for the world to see takes her team more than two hours.

In almost all cases her look is reflected in the bank accounts of her A team.

“It translates into money for my designer and my stylist. They always get a lot of calls after every event,” Matheba said.

She said she was particular about what went out on social media.

“I do all my postings of my first look.

“I manage my social media. It’s more authentic and personal.

“I am mindful of what I say and I pay a lot of attention to detail.”
