TECHNOLOGY will break the barriers between first and third-world countries.

Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology CEO, Jayandra Ramnundlall said technology is an empowering tool that allows people to have access to information,

“It doesn't matter whether you’re in Nongoma or New York, as long as you have access to that information, you can use it to your advantage,” he said.

Ramnundlall was speaking on the sidelines of the institute’s first Research Conference recently.

The event saw keynote speakers, from the technology and science industries, gather in Umhlanga to highlight the empowering role of technology in education.

Ramnundlall said the institute already proved this with the Tablet initiative in which students registered for the Higher Education Qualifications are provided with technology including a Tablet device.

“Students came to campus, they charge their laptops and tablets, recorded videos and used the WiFi, and went home and showed their parents,” he said.

Now students will be able to learn from their counterparts abroad.

The Richfield institute announced, at the conference, that it would be partnering with the State of New York University for a COIL initiative.

COIL, which refers to Collaborative Online International Learning, allows students to engage with other institutions online.

Ramnundlall said: “So this is a virtual student exchange programme through which students can get into groups with their counterparts in New York and exchange ideas.”

The Research Conference is expected to be an annual event with researchers gathering from across the world next year to collaborate on developing education through technology.
