Durban - Skilful and deceptively quick off the mark, Jaydene Govender, is a Banyana Banyana star in the making.

In her debut season for Bayview United, the 12-year-old’s technique and pace often left defenders bamboozled.

A rose among the thorns, Govender is the only female player in SAFA Chatsworth’s under-13 league.

She netted five goals this year as United won the league and cup double undefeated.

“It feels great to have contributed to the team. I love playing the game and having the ball at my feet,” Govender said.

The striker was scouted by United during the Bayhaven Schools Development Programme last year. Her silky skills for Coedmore Primary School piqued the interest of coach, Trevino Naidoo, who convinced her to join his club.

Being the only female in the team did not deter Govender from taking up the opportunity to play amateur club football.

“I started playing football at home with my brother and then got into my school team. Playing club football was a challenge for me at first but I adjusted quickly,” Govender said.

She continued, “My coach has pushed me a lot in training, he made me turn my weakness into strengths.”

After lifting the league trophy, Govender had the opportunity to lead United’s line at the Chatsworth Stadium. Naidoo’s side beat Montford Heights to secure the double with his hard working striker playing a starring role up-front.

“Jaydene was an instrumental component in my team all year long,” Naidoo said.

“Her goals were crucial and she defended from the front. What sets her apart is her discipline - never misses training and is brave enough to use her skills in the game.”

The Manchester City fan who looks up to Argentine ace, Sergio Aguero, hopes to build on her first campaign.

“My ambition is to make football my profession one day. Right now I just have to keep working hard,” Govender said.

“I know that there is a lot for me to work on. I have to keep practising my dribbling as well as my communication skills,” she added.

She has the backing of her parents, Leanne and Thamin who ensure that they are on the touchline to cheer their star on.

“It is an awesome feeling to see Jaydene out there,” her mother said.

She continued, “It is intriguing to watch the only girl among the boys. This is something she believes in and she has all our support.”
