This year’s Easter Weekend celebrations have been remarkably different for Christians in South Africa and across the world due to lockdown measures meant to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, one of South Africa’s most revered gospel stars, Ntokozo Mbambo, has teamed up with Telkom on an innovative way to deliver a virtual Easter Sunday praise and worship service for her fans.

“The truth is that the message of Passover does not change because our circumstances have changed, and that, for me, is important that we keep reminding ourselves that God’s perfect plan for our salvation is fulfilled as we celebrate this weekend. We are saved because Jesus died on the cross for our sins,” said Mbambo.

Mbambo is a product of the popular gospel choir, Joyous Celebration, and has become one of the most sought after artists. Her recent single, Jehovah is Your Name has been viewed over 25 million times on YouTube.

Mbambo has had to cancel her scheduled live music events, including a live recording experience for her fans because of the lockdown.

“The most important one is that we have been staying indoors, washing our hands regularly and observing the right precautions. I have become a teacher to my little girls, while hubby (fellow gospel star, Nqubeko Mbatha) and I continue with our Bible college courses as well.

“So it’s a house of studies at the moment. We obviously enjoy baking, cooking and watching TV together. Worship and prayer is critical at this time, so I started a #TarryWithMe session on Wednesdays for people to join us in prayer and worship online,” she said.

“My brand is about Gospel music excellence. I want to be remembered for my music, but I also just want to be a good wife to my husband and mother to my children. It’s of no use to be known out there and not serve the very people closest to me on a daily basis,” she added.

When delivering the Easter Sunday service, Mbambo will be performing from the comfort of her home, and her performance will be streamed live exclusively on Telkom Plus, accessible to customers who have an active Telkom SIM card.

This is just one of Mbambo’s various collaborations with household brands. She was recently in a partnership with the Tastic Rice, joining famous people such as fashion designer David Tlale and Ndebele painter and traditional artist Esther Mahlangu.

The last Easter Sunday Praise and Worship Service will be hosted today (Sunday) at 5pm.
