If there's any initiative that has a contribution to the social fabric of society, it has to be the South African Book Fair.

This year’s event, which started on Friday at Joburg’s Newtown cultural precinct, showcased 120 authors dealing with contentious issues in South Africa.

The three-day programme of events, includes books on entertainment, education, empowerment, information and advancement in technology. The visually impaired are also catered for as the SA Library for the Blind showcased tactile books, promoting a positive reading experience for the blind and visually impaired.

“An interest in reading is often catalysed by a personal experience of storytelling,” said Elitha van der Sandt, chief executive of South African Book Development Council chief executive, which hosts both National Book Week and the South African Book Fair every year.

The National Book Week aim to get as many books into South African homes.
