Afro-jazz artist Solomon Willy has been announced as a headline performer for iSupport Music Business and Concerts SA. iSupport Music Business is an initiative that fosters support for live music.

Spokesperson Marlyn Ntsele said yesterday that the organisation was excited to bring Willy to the Luthuli Museum in Groutville, KwaZulu-Natal, as part of their diverse programming.

“We have worked with Willy before and his performances are always great fun with a range of talented musicians showcasing their skills,” said Ntsele.

Concerts SA is a joint South African and Norwegian live music development project housed within the Samro (South African Music Rights Organisation) Foundation and receives financial, administrative and technical support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Samro, the Samro Foundation and Concerts Norway.

“Working with musicians, promoters, venue owners and audiences, and providing support to the sector through research and skills development for music professionals, the project aims to build a vibrant and viable live music circuit in southern Africa.

"It also aims to develop an interest and appreciation of live music by showcasing music performances and conducting workshops at schools,” said Ntsele.

The Nigerian-born artist and his band are expected to entice jazz lovers with their versatile sounds and professional performances.

Based in Durban, Willy is known as a performing artist, composer and a music producer in the jazz industry.

He and his band, who he describes as a team, have vast experience from playing at events and jazz festivals.

“It is always exciting to perform for my South African audience. They love good music and bring their own energy to my shows. I get entertained by how they steal the show on the dance floor and sing along,” said Willy.

“We are bringing some of the best afro-beat and jazz music to Groutville. You can expect some Fela Kuti and more. It's not to be missed.

“I am planning a tour around Johannesburg later this year. I will be visiting The Orbit and other wonderful venues,” he added.

* Catch Willy at the Luthuli Museum in Groutville, on Friday, February 2. Doors open at 6pm and tickets are on sale for R30 at the door.
