A man was arrested after his car collided with two cars on the N3 in Germiston, leaving one person dead and three injured, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

The 28-year-old man, who is facing a charge of driving while under the influence of alcohol, has admitted that “he had one [drink] too many”, Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng said.

“He seemed to be alone in the vehicle at the time of the accident and he didn’t sustain any visible injuries.”

Mokheseng said a 33-year-old man was declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

A seriously injured boy (9) was taken to the Union Hospital.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that a driver travelling on the N3 towards Pretoria somehow fell asleep behind the steering wheel.”

Traffic on the N3 towards Pretoria was affected for three hours while emergency personnel were working on the scene, he said.

Mokheseng said the cause of the accident would be investigated and a case of culpable homicide was registered at the Germiston police station.

More charges could be brought against the man, who is expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon. – Sapa
