Johannesburg - Nelson Mandela is expected to be discharged and will go home “soon”, his grandson Ndaba Mandela said on Thursday.

The younger Mandela was speaking at a media briefing for next month’s Nelson Mandela Football Invitational, which will form part of the Mandela Day celebrations at Durban’s Moses Mabhida stadium.

The tournament will feature English Premiership giants Manchester City as well as PSL sides AmaZulu and SuperSport United.

Ndaba said his family were grateful for Madiba’s life and weren’t ready to contemplate his death.

Mandela was admitted to Pretoria’s Mediclinic Heart Hospital for a recurring lung problem a fortnight ago.

At the time, his old friend Andrew Mlangeni called for the family to “release him” so that “God may have His own way”.

On Thursday, Ndaba said: “Only God can take him… but for us, as family, as long as he can still hear and understand what is said to him, and talk to us, we’ll continue to celebrate him.”

He thanked “everybody, from across the world”, who sent well-wishes to his grandfather during his illness.
