Johannesburg - Former chairperson of Parliament’s standing committee on public accounts (Scopa) Themba Godi, says his party the African People’s Convention (APC) would be contesting the 2021 local government elections.

The APC did not do so well in the last general elections and this saw them losing all seats in Parliament. The party is now working towards regaining public confidence and will contest some big municipalities in the Western Cape and Gauteng.

“We are going to contest in all the nine provinces and in June we will be reviewing the progress. We currently have 16 councillors in six provinces,” said Godi.

Godi said his views on social justice and good governance emerged quite dramatically in his work as a Scopa chairperson. He firmly believes in the Africa where indigenous people don’t have to feel unworthy of any job tittle or feel guilty for owning land and the natural resources of their countries.

“The compass of my political work was from reading some books on slavery, the Pan Africanist view informed my politics even when I was in parliament, I fought not to lose the Pan Africanist view.”

The party is struggling with resources but Godi said he was confident it would be able to make it back to Parliament, despite the numerous challenges.

“In the absence of the daily rigorous Scopa work, I am now able to focus on building the APC and I am optimistic that we are moving forward and all of this is dedication and tenacity to a cause. Once people are committed to a cause they are able to sacrifice.”
