A 32-year-old woman is behind bars for allegedly killing her four children with a sledgehammer in Tsalaba Village in the Eastern Cape this morning.

The children, aged 2, 5, 9, and 11, were found dead in the room where they slept. According to the police, a sledgehammer had been used on their upper bodies.

Eastern Cape SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana said police received a report this morning about four children that had been beaten to death, allegedly by their mother.

“According to the report, four bodies of children were found in their rondavel. Our preliminary investigation revealed they had been assaulted with a sledgehammer, and as a result, they suffered serious injuries to their upper bodies,” said Kinana.

He said it was not yet known if anyone heard the children scream.
