Mbuso Khoza, the award-winning vocalist and songwriter, will perform at Joburg's Market Theatre for the first time, offering a unique music concert that promises to deliver the rich and authentic sounds he is known for.

Speaking ahead of the three-day performance, Khoza said he was thrilled to be performing at the Market Theatre for the first time.

“I was having a discussion with James Ngcobo, who is an artistic director at the Market Theatre, about the possibilities of bringing the heritage work I have done.

“The most rewarding moment for me is that when I came here, I used to stay not far from the theatre. I used to see musicians coming in and out of the theatre. For me to come here for the first time, it means people can expect a lot from me, my spirit, my heart and warmth,” he said.

Khoza is a rare musical talent that arose from the rolling hills of Eshowe in KwaZulu-Natal and took the world music circuit by storm.

His single Eshowe is a mid-tempo, easy-listening tune, which speaks of the challenges he has overcome.

The album is a delicate mix of deep traditional Zulu music infused with jazz elements - showcasing the true depth of his artistic and diverse talent.

Khoza said Eshowe means a lot to him. “It is a special place that is close to my heart. It’s my heritage, it's who I am," he said.

He will be accompanied by a live band with special guest artist Zawadi Yamungu. Yamungu is part of the Legacy of KZN Mentorship Programme that Khoza started.

He started the programme because he saw the need for KZN artists to get more exposure.

“I noticed that we don’t have enough females in the music industry that are in the same level as Thandiswa Mazwai and MamBusi Mhlongo. I wanted to gather the talent from KZN and let it compete on the international stage,” he said.

Khoza, who is currently study-

ing heritage studies at Wits University, was the winner of best jazz album in 2013.

He has performed extensively in Senegal, Burkina Faso, Portugal, Switzerland, France and the Netherlands.
