The newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Media, Information and Communication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority (MICT) SETA, Matome Madibana has appealed to the private sector to increase the absorption of interns into permanent jobs.

Madibana who officially started his duties as CEO this month told The Star that he had a passion for young people. He said he hoped to see more young people getting absorbed into the work place in his term as CEO.

The MICT SETA is responsible for at least 9 500 interns annually, The SETA cuts across the media and communications space as well as information technology.

"We have to continue doing a lot more for our young people. The MICT SETA is the bridge across all industries as technology is becoming a need in all different SETAs. We must invest in young people and skilling them is investing in our future," Madibana said.

Madibana said the MICT SETA had just entered into a successful partnership with the SABC with hope of at least 80% of the interns being recruited.

"A months ago we were at the SABC to onboard 150 interns who will be exposed to the great world of broadcasting to gain valuable knowledge and skills that will prepare them for the broader media industry, this is a collaborative partnership between the MICT SETA and SABC to growing an inclusive economy, and building capabilities, which are part of what we have been established for as SETA’s," he said

Madibana called on private companies in the electronics space to donate some gadgets to schools in rural areas as part of familiarising young people with technology at an earlier stage, "When learners get introduced to technology at a later stage like tertiary it makes it difficult for them to adapt compared to their counterparts who were more privileged," Madibana said.

MICT SETA is taking a step closer towards South Africa’s skills development and economic growth targets within the sub-sectors of Advertising, Film and Electronic Media, Electronics, Information Technology and Telecommunications, as well as a focus on 4IR skills development that empowers young people to contribute to the global digital economy.
