Motorists who applied for new driving licence cards or renewal are urged to collect the more than 17 000 cards that remain uncollected.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has urged all motorists who applied for new driving licence cards or renewal of their licence cards between October 2021 and December 2021 to present themselves for collection.

The RTMC said to date, the two RTMC licensing centres have received 32 748 licence cards from the Driving Licence Card Account (DLCA), a Department of Transport entity that prints

driving licence cards.

“However, an underwhelming 42% of those have been collected to date, leaving a total of 17 011 licence cards uncollected,” the corporation said in a statement.

Last year, the Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula opened the RTMC licensing centres in Midrand and Eco Park r in response to the backlog of expired licences that resulted

from the closure of licensing centres due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak

“The DLCA has reported that it is working 24 hour shifts to fast-track the printing of

driving licence cards. It says it has produced 919 000 cards since January 20, 2022

and remains on course to clear the backlog of applications by the end of June,” RTMC said.

The organisation added that motorists with licences that expired between March 2020 and August 31, 2021 who missed the renewal deadline of May 5, 2022 are advised to obtain temporary driving when applying for renewals to remain legally compliant.
