Johannesburg – An off-duty police officer allegedly shot dead a motorist after an alleged road rage incident in Cosmo City on Thursday night. The police officer and the motorist had allegedly got into a heated argument.

The police officer was attached to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD).

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, a spokesperson for the JMPD, said the incident happened at about 7.15pm on South Africa Road. He said the off-duty police officer had been driving in his white VW Golf when he allegedly made a U-turn and nearly collided with a blue Nissan Almera.

“The driver of the Almera chased behind the Golf and there were words exchanged, and the occupants of the Almera tried to disarm the officer,” Minnaar said.

“The officer shot multiple times at the Almera with his service pistol and killed the motorist,” he said.

Minnaar said the incident would be investigated by the South African Police Service and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

Gauteng police spokesperson Kay Makhubele said the case would be handled by Ipid. He was not aware if a murder docket had been opened.
