Johannesburg - The National Lottery Commission has donated R2-million to Alex FM to assist in the rebuilding of the studios of the north of Joburg community radio station.
The Alexandra-based radio station was one of a handful of structures affected by the violent looting that occurred last week in some parts of the country’s provinces.
According to the station manager, Takalane Nemangowe, the station lost equipment to the value of R5m, including studio computers, audio equipment and (incurred) major damages to the property.
Many other organisations and broadcasters also formed part of those who donated to “Rebuild Alex FM”.
Among the donors were Primedia; Kaya FM; Jacaranda FM; Skyside SA; Rays of Hope; Groot FM and LM Radio.
“We are here with the blessings from the National Lotteries Commission as they heard of our plight of the mayhem to receive a contribution to try to normalise our dire situation.
“From the station management, board and the entire community of Alexandra we receive this great gesture from the National Lotteries Commission and extend our appreciation from the members of the media at large for their continued support,” Nemangowe said.
Alex FM has been in operation for 27 years, but since the damage to the station they had to temporarily move operations to LM Radio station in Sandton.
Alex FM board chairperson Isaac Mangena said they were humbled by the act of kindness from organisations, ordinary people and businesses.
“This radio station has been the launching pad for many of the big names in mainstream radio. It has produced the best in the industry. The aftermath of the looting has been a disappointment to many but we are hopeful that we will change the damaged image imprinted in the Alexandra community,” Mangena said.
He said the smallest donation received yet was R25, which they welcomed, as every little cent counted.
