Johannesburg - A newly-wed Joburg couple were electrocuted in their home on Sunday as a result of what is thought to have been a faulty electrical connection.

Nabeelah and Zaheer Sarang are believed to have made several reports to City Power about electrical faults at their home in Crosby, near Mayfair, in Joburg.

Their last visit to the power utility is believed to have been 10 days before the tragedy occurred.

It is believed that Nabeelah collapsed in the shower after turning on the tap, and her husband, Zaheer, was then electrocuted while trying to save her.

“I knew something terrible had happened when I heard cries coming from their home. It is devastating what happened to Zaheer and his bride, especially after they have just returned from their honeymoon,” said the couple's neighbour, Hassan Aalim, speaking to News 24.

City Power chief executive Mongezi Ntsokolo has requested the team to launch an urgent investigation into the allegations that the couple were killed by a faulty electrical connection, attributed to the illegal connection in the area.

Ntsokolo said the power utility urged residents in the area to avoid tampering with City Power infrastructure while investigations were under way.

“From Monday morning the team has been busy with a preliminary investigation to establish the facts, and we will provide the details at a later stage.

“While we are busy with investigations, we urge the residents to desist from tampering with electricity infrastructure, vandalism, and illegal connections which may lead to the circuit malfunctioning,” he said.

Police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo confirmed that an inquest docket was opened after the couple’s bodies were found and that they awaited a post-mortem to confirm the cause of death.
