Johannesburg - A security officer was shot dead during an armed robbery at the Randridge Mall in Randpark, Randburg on Tuesday.

It is alleged that six suspects stormed into the Pep store at the mall and grabbed the security officer who was standing by the entrance of the store and dragged him inside.

According to the Sowetan, Honeydew police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan said while inside the store, the suspects ransacked one of the tills and stole R270.

He added that the guard managed to prevent the robbers from stealing more money after he pressed the panic button.

It was further alleged that the suspects also stole the ring of a customer, who was inside the store during the robbery.

According to Muthan, the guard was shot in the lower abdomen and was treated on the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital, where he later died.

Muthan confirmed that no arrests have been made and police investigations are continuing.

The suspects who are still at large fled the scene in a blue Toyota and a Hyundai.
