One is a meisie and the other a ntombazana. Together they become 'Meizana', a group formed by Phathiswa Magangane and Bianca Wood.

The two are a Johannesburg-based music duo of vocalists with a refreshing, South African Pop sound.

"We both have music careers as individuals and we've both known about each other, our circles intertwined but we never met. We followed each other on social media and then about a year ago we met up and found out we were both going to take part in the singing contest The Voice. After we both didn't make it through we decided to create a group and that is how we formed Meizana," said Wood.

The group name came from the concept of female and what it is like being female in the industry. The women have performed with music heavyweights including the likes of Gloria Bosman and pop-rock stars, The Parlotones.

Wood comes from Hammanskraal and Magangane from Springs.

Meizana released their debut single, “Another You” last year followed by two  more singles, “She” and “Los!”.

"We are finding a way slowly but surely to fuse our backgrounds into our music. We are incorporating three languages in our music which is quite interesting and we are both learning each other's mother tongue as we go."

"We are in the pop realm of music with other influences as well like house and modern maskandi guitar melodies. We are using language and genre and what we both like to make it work."

The two are making the most of the lockdown by working on their first album.

"It should be done around October. It's a daunting task having to work remotely, but we are relying on technology to get our ideas across."

Their single Break Free came at a perfect time.

"It is trying to capture that feeling of inspiration and things building up inside of you. Particularly for musicians we have this creativity and we are in lockdown. It's a creative outcry of trying to free ourselves."

The duo hopes to create relationships with people who will listen to their music.

"When they connect they can see our music and our friendship. It's amazing not to be alone and to have each other. For Break Free if people can listen to it, close their eyes and imagine they are at a festival and dance their hearts out that would be amazing."
