He died in Joburg on Wednesday at the age of 79.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the untimely passing of Professor Kgositsile, affectionately known as Bra Willie,” said a short statement from his family.

His friend and fellow writer Mandla Langa said the national poet laureate died at Milpark Hospital after he was operated on.

“He suffered from blood circulation problems. He was ill during the festive season, and in the new year he got critical and was hospitalised. He was operated on but sadly passed away.

“He was with family members when he passed away,” Langa said.

He said Kgositsile would be remembered for his creativity and for training young poets and writers.

“He was a people’s person. He was a committed member of the ANC I will miss his insightful mind and warmth. He was the most inspirational person I’ve ever known,” Langa said.

He said Kgositsile, who wrote This Way I Salute You in 2004 and When The Clouds Clear in 1999, was survived by his wife Baby, seven children and grandchildren.
