Thembisa Mdoda and Mashabela Galane are making millionaires in style. The duo are the new hosts of Your Next Million, a four-minute game show set to get South Africans talking.
On Tuesday, the presenters took The Star on a luxury gold limo ride around Joburg to get a taste of how the show will work.
Local comedian Galane has paved the way for vernacular comedians in the country and said he was excited to be part of the show.
While on the limo ride, heading towards one of Joburg’s popular Italian restaurants, Gemelli Cucina Bar, Galane said: “It’s a big deal for me.
“I will be interviewing the contestants before they play to win some money and just after they have played, to establish what they will be doing with their winnings.”
He told The Star that the game show was his big break in showbiz.
“I’ve never done a game show except Mo-China,” he joked.
Galane has been the pioneer of his own comedy, Comedy Under the Sun, which invites audiences to experience 80% comedy and 20% music.
He said the key to staying relevant in the industry was through social media: “Once in a while, I do videos and those keep me relevant.”
Mdoda, who shot to stardom hosting Mzansi Magic reality series Our Perfect Wedding (OPW), will be the main host of the show and said the game show aligned with her ambitions for 2018. She said she had a great team to assist her in “channelling” her new role on the game show.
“It has been a learning curve. With OPW, there was time and we could talk, but with this quick show I needed to channel my energy,” she said.
“The show aims to help Standard Bank customers achieve their next goal, and I am happy to be part of it as it will help all South Africans achieve their goals, while allowing me to achieve some of mine for the year,” Mdoda said.
“This is a show that makes people’s dreams come true.”
Mdoda said she believed that everyone deserved the opportunity to participate in the game show. “When you ask someone what is your next goal, they go deep into their dreams. It’s unlimited.”
The Your Next Million game show will not only be about giving money away, but about how that money can be used to help people reach their goals, whether that’s paying school fees, buying a car or even buying a house.
Tinyiko Mageza, head of retail marketing at Standard Bank, said: “The game show’s ultimate goal is to give our customers the means to craft their own success.”
