DURBAN - Kapoor, known for hit songs including Baby Doll, Lovely and Chittiyan Kalayiaan, is expected to be part of feeding underprivileged children at the Durban ICC during the day to commemorate Nelson Mandela’s centenary, with her performance taking place that evening.

Durban-based organisation Unity South Africa paired up with Los Angeles-based cinema company Hcorp Group to bring Kapoor to the city.

Unity SA’s founder and the show’s executive producer Jemma van Breda said they would also host a film seminar for 100 young film creatives.

After achieving in overall champion divisions at the World Championships of Performing Arts in Los Angeles, Van Breda was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Millenium Dance Complex in Los Angeles where she trained with the likes of Dance Moms Abby Lee Miller Twitch Boss, Matt Steffanina and Step Up dancer Misha Gabriel.

“The Kanika Kapoor event is a hybrid never before seen and an event like this does wonders for our KZN arts industry. We hope it will reignite our audiences’ love for film, music and dance through one of the purest forms - live entertainment,” she said.

“I grew up in Durban so working on an event of this calibre, more than 6000 people, alongside local technicians, dancers and cinematographers, is like working alongside family. The best part is, we’re all growing on an international scale every step of the way with learnerships in every aspect of production and engagement with international ideas.

“Most of all, I love that this is a heritage celebration - I returned from my life abroad a couple years ago because I missed my country, its people and our unique styles. Having a platform like this international film set where we’re performing items that are true to our cultures is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Van Breda.

Hcorp’s Prabhu Nepaul, who grew up in Chatsworth and flits between Los Angeles and India, is looking forward to hosting the show on his home turf.

“Our focus is not only on giving a voice to all artistic, dance, acting and music genres, but also to those on and off camera - directing, editing, producing and cinematography and photography,” said Van Breda.

She added that her last collaboration with Nepaul saw local dancers being taught and awarded scholarships by Kendrick Lamar, dancer and choreographer Betty Rox, and Beyoncé dancer Amy Morgan.

The show starts at 8pm on Friday. Tickets cost from R99 at Computicket.
