The stars smiled down at film awards

IT WAS an evening of stars where the bold, the beautiful and the brazen converged to provide spectacular entertainment to mark the 58th Idea Filmfare Awards – South last week in Andhra Pradesh, India.

It celebrated creative brilliance and talent in the field of entertainment.

The performances kept audiences glued to the seats while excellence in several categories was recognised.

Aayirathil Oruvan topped the list with nine nominations followed by Madrasapattinam and Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa with seven each.

Enthiran received six nominations and Angadi Theru and Paiya five each.

There were four nominations each for Mynaa, Raavanan, Singam and two each for Boss Engira Bhaskaran, Manmadan Ambu and Naan Mahaan Alla.

The Best Film award went to Mynaa with the other nominations being Aayirathil Oruvan, Angadi Theru, Enthiran, Madrasapattinam and Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa.

The Best Director was scooped by Vasanthabalan for the movie Angadi Theru.

The other contenders were Gautham Menon ( Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa), Prabu Solomon ( Mynaa), Selvaraghavan ( Aayirathil Oruva n), S Shankar ( Enthira n) and AL Vijay ( Madrasapattina m).

Vikram took the Best Actor award for his role in Raavanan competing against Arya ( Madrasapattinam), Karthi ( Paiyaa and Aayirathil Oruvan), Rajinikanth ( Enthiran), Silambarasan ( Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa) and Suriya ( Singam).

Newcomer Anjali won Best Actress for her role in Angadi Theru .

The other contenders were Amala Paul ( Myna a), Nayantara ( Boss Engira Bhaskaran), Reemma Sen (A ayirathil Oruvan), Tamannaah Bhatia ( Paiyaa) and Trisha Krishnan ( Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa).

The Best Supporting Actor went to Parthiban for his role in Aayirathil Oruvan and Best Supporting Actress to Saranya Ponvannan for Thenmerku Paruvakaatru.

AR Rahman scooped Best Music Director for Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa and Thamarai took Best Lyricist for the song Mannipaya from Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa.

The Best male playback singer went to Karthik for Usure Poguthey from the movie Raavanan and the Best female playback singer was Shreya Ghoshal for Un Perai Sollum from the movie Angadi Theru.

The Best Choreographer was Baba Bhaskar for Kadhal Vandhale in Singam, the Best Cinematographer was Rathnavelu for Endhiran, the Best Costume Award went to Manish Malhotra for Endhiran and the Best Production Design was scooped by Sabu Cyril for Endhiran.
