Durban - A 24-year-old man who allegedly opened a false case of hijacking has been charged with perjury and is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court later today.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the 24-year-old had been travelling with a 27-year-old on February 26 when they were stopped by police just after midnight.

The 27-year-old, who was the driver of the car, was arrested for arrested for being intoxicated.

It is alleged that the 24-year-old, who was a passenger, went to the Durban Central SAPS that same day and reported to police that he was hijacked at gunpoint by an unknown suspect.

"He made a statement under oath stating how he was robbed of his vehicle."

Mbele said an intensive investigation that was conducted by detectives revealed that he was not robbed of his vehicle but it was parked at Berea SAPS.

"The vehicle was kept at the police station after the driver was arrested for being intoxicated."

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula condemned the wasting of State resources.

“People who open false cases cannot be tolerated and will be dealt with harshly. State resources are being wasted on false cases instead of focusing on genuine cases. All those who still continue to open false cases will be prosecuted,” said Jula.

In August last year, a Durban man was charged for defeating the ends of justice for lying about his car being hijacking.

According to police the car was used to commit and that the suspect only reported the hijacking to cover up the fact that the vehicle was used in the commission of a crime.
