Durban - Vernon Nagan will only stop studying the day he gets a doctorate in his field.

That is according to the 22-year-old, who graduated cum laude in civil engineering earlier in the year at the Durban University of Technology (DUT).

Now completing his BTech at Unisa, the Chatsworth resident said he had big plans for his future which was why he would not stop.

“I want to reach the top. After I graduated, I started work but I got bored. I wanted to apply my mind more and DUT had a waiting period so I immediately enrolled at Unisa,” he said.

Nagan, who works as a civil engineer technician, told POST, he aimed to one day be a “triple treat”.

“At the moment I am just consulting, but later I want to get into contracting and maybe in about 10 years I could be doing consulting, contracting and even lecturing. I guess I have a driving force in me and I refuse to stop. Also, I haven’t heard of many engineers with doctorates,” he said.

Nagan gets home after 6pm daily and begins studying until after midnight. His dad, Seelan, told POST, he had not seen anyone as hard-working as his son.

“He is very dedicated and he has dreams to go places. He will never stop learning, even after his doctorate I believe he will try to learn more or something else.”

Nagan added that he wanted to branch out into a special field of engineering.

“I have discovered something called water engineering. It deals with hydraulics and working at dams and pipelines. I am doing it at this firm at the moment but I want to specialise in the field so I would need more hours and more experience. Water engineering is more challenging as well and I enjoy challenging myself and pushing my mind,” he said.

Nagan is expecting to graduate with top marks again at the end of next year.
