Read:  Violence in schools - where have we gone wrong?

With this type of behaviour creeping into our schools, this is a clear indication urgent intervention is needed.

If this trend continues, it will be the beginning of anarchy in schools.

My appeal is don’t let criminals take over schools. We should be wary that rampant crime, violence and carrying weapons to schools do not become the norm.

The rise in violence at schools is a barometer of turbulence, dysfunctionality and the breakdown of values in our society.

Such behaviour is also an indictment of our society. Perhaps new skills are needed to engage the youth.

Children react to challenges in accordance with the quality of nurturing and healthy socialisation, which they are exposed to in their own environment.

The Department of Education must form a multi-disciplinary team to tackle the challenges.

It’s time for parents to take an active role.

I would like to advocate to all schools that criminal charges be laid against those responsible for bullying and gang violence.

It is time for our children to start learning which is the most powerful tool.

Nelson Mandela said: “Children of today are the leaders of tomorrow and education is a very important weapon to prepare children for their future role as leaders of the community.”

I hope our children take heed and school violence must fall or we are heading for disaster.
