Durban - Ahead of the IEC voter registration taking place this weekend, the Democratic Alliance (DA) embarked on their election campaign in Phoenix on Wednesday.

Mmusi Maimane, the leader of the DA, walked the streets encouraging people to register to vote this weekend.

Addressing the crowds, Maimane likened having the ANC in power in eThekwini for five years to having a cellphone contract for same period of time.

"That cellphone will stop working, it will break.... you can't spend five years using the same cellphone.

"Why do you want to keep the ANC in this province for another five years without an upgrade?

"I'm here to say if you want change, vote for change and that is the DA."

While dozens of people rushed to Maimane to shake hands and exchange a few words with him, he also encouraged youth that he saw loitering around to not lose hope in their search for a job.

A street vendor, Sarika Ramnarian told the leader she is pleased to see him in the area and was praying for change.

Shane Madanjith told Maimane he is glad to see him but wondered why it was only during election time that residents saw political figures, to which he responded, “we are always here” and “change is coming”.

People could also be heard screaming “Viva DA” from inside the taxis.

Maimane also visited Umlazi Mega City where he met with people at the mall and encouraged them to vote.

On Wednesday evening, he is expected to join residents at Redfern Community Hall in Phoenix to discuss land reform and expropriation, crime and jobs.
