Man arrested for alleged fake hijacking

Durban - A Mount Edgecombe man will face charges of perjury after he alleged staged a hijacking to allegedly to defraud his insurance company. 

The 37-year-old man is expected to appear in the Verulam Magistrate's Court shortly. 

KwaZulu Natal police spokesman, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, said it is alleged that the man planned the fake hijacking on January 23, 2018, during a meeting in Springfield Park.

"On January 26 at about 11am, the suspect reported that he was hijacked for his silver Jaguar near Mount Moriah by two men at gunpoint. 

"On the same day, the vehicle was recovered in the Chesterville area and suspects were arrested. "

She said thorough police investigation revealed that the ‘hijacking victim’ had planned the hijacking in order to defraud the insurance by claiming for a hijacked vehicle.

"A case of defeating the ends of justice was immediately opened against him and he was also charged for perjury."
