Durban - KZN police say a case of murder has been opened after a 48-year-old teacher was shot dead at a school in Folweni on Tuesday morning.

"It is alleged today at 9am, a 48-year-old man was shot and killed inside the school premises at Folweni by an unknown suspect. The victim was declared dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated," said police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele. She said the suspect fled the scene and police are still searching for them.

The KZN Education Department condemned the barbaric attack and said officials were currently at the school.

"Schools should be a safe environment. No one should use schools as a soft target," the department said in a statement.

They called for police to bring the perpetrators to book.

Netcare 911 said the victim who had been walking in the passageway at the school sustained a gunshot wound to the head and died at the scene.

Multiple shots were fired.
