Durban - A bevy of 12 beauties will converge at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg on Friday, vying for the Mrs South Africa 2017 title.

Gauteng finalists Reevana Govender, 29, an optometrist, and Prenita Reddi, 38, who runs a transport company, are ready to put their best leg forward in the annual contest.

With this month marking the 157th anniversary of the arrival of Indians to South Africa, Govender said it was vital to commemorate the milestone event.

“We should always use these anniversaries as a benchmark of how far we have come as a community, the contribution we have made to society and a point of reference for a positive future,” said Govender.

Reddi said that although the history of the Indian indentured labourers was shrouded in pain and adversity, it was still a part of our history.

“I embrace who I am and am proud of my heritage, and happy to be a part of the diversity of South Africa. I believe the spirit and strength of our nation is reflected in our diverse cultures.”

The contest will be broadcast on Sunday on SABC 3 at 6.30pm.
