Durban - A Phoenix man accused of killing an elderly Merebank woman had allegedly been to her home on the day of the incident seeking marital advice when he found her drenched in blood and laying on the floor.

Dhanwathie Fakira, 79, was found dead in Arcot Place home on November 25.

She had sustained multiple stab wounds and her lifeless body was discovered by relatives who had been visiting her home.

Hours later Jithin Ramjaewan, 37, was arrested and charged for murder.

During his bail application in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, Ramjaewan testified in court that he received a call from the deceased on the Friday before the incident requesting that he visit her to speak about his marital problems.

"When I went to house door, I had knocked and called out for ‘nani’ and when she didn't answer I went inside and sat in the lounge, that is when I could hear someone gasping for breath.

"I took a few steps towards the passage and then saw her laying on the floor, drenched in blood. I took out a knife that was ‘hanging by her shoulder’ and left it one side. I took off my shirt and used it to apply pressure on the wounds," he said.

Ramjaewan said he tried to call out to neighbours but it proved futile and that his phone battery was low and would not allow him to make a call.

He said he left the home after he allegedly heard shuffling and noises on the roof and around the house.

"I became scared and panicked so I left the house. I started walking and met a security guard who let me use his phone. I called my ex- wife and asked her to call the police and my dad to come pick me up," he said.

The case was adjourned until Tuesday for further evidence.
