Durban: A Verulam dad who was allegedly knocked and killed while patrolling his community, has been hailed for his contribution towards safety.
Abdool Wahid Sayed, 40, of Mount Vernon, was assisting the community by patrolling the area during the unrest when he was knocked in an alleged hit-and-run last Tuesday.
The father of seven, who suffered head injuries, was taken to hospital. He died the following day.
Rokaya Sayed, his sister, said he was a humble and good-hearted person.
“He always put the needs of others before his own. We believe he was intentionally knocked and hit by a speeding car.”
Sayed said Abdool was one of the founders of the NPO, Share of Strength (SOS), and that he was involved in charity drives to assist poor communities.
“He was also a religious leader and he strived in the path of Allah. He loved spreading the word of Islam and to unite all. We have indeed lost a role model. We have lost such a great hero. My brother, who was known as Soko in the community, will always be remembered for his beautiful recitation of the Qur’an and for assisting, protecting and providing for his community.”
Sayed was buried at the Verulam Muslim Cemetery on Thursday.
Police did not respond at the time of publication.
